Apple considering Head-Mounted Display Apparatus for Portable devices

Apple Head-Mounted Display

Apple in the past has unveiled quite a few products that have certainly taken the world by storm. It looks like their endeavor doesn’t just stop at the MacBook, iPhone, iPod and the recently released iPad. As disclosed on Free Patents Online, Apple is now planning to venture into fashioning a head-mounted display apparatus for portable device with display.

A new patent application from the company chalks out a pair of goggle-like glasses complete with a built-in screen and headphones. The headgear has the ability to wirelessly communicate with a portable electronic device with display such as an iPod or iPhone. This particular device can then transmit content directly to the goggles or even control them through a wire or cable. As the company suggests, the head-mounted devices that are espied in the market these days are referred to as complex and unwieldy whereas this gadget would do away with the redundant features.

Apple feels that, “There is a need for an improved head-mounted display system, particularly a system that temporarily integrates or merges both mechanically and electronically a head-mounted device with a portable electronic device.” As the document explains, the device has a frame which is placed directly in front of the user’s eyes and is designed to wirelessly display content from the portable devices. The image will automatically be adjusted for a comfortable viewing experience. It would also enable the user to “relax while viewing image based content on the head-mounted device because he does not have to hold onto the portable electronic device.”

The latest invention from Apple also has comprises of a camera, speaker, microphone, controls, sensors and batteries among others. An example was also sited in the application. It states, “Accelerometers on the head-mounted device and/or the portable electronic device can be used to detect the user’s head movements. In this example, the head-mounted device can associate a particular head movement with a command for controlling an operation of the head-mounted display system.”

There have been more examples sited in the Apple application. For many it may seem like an April fool’s joke but to others it is perceived as a revolutionary product. No official word on the pricing or release dates of the new invention from Apple. We do hope to see the device hitting stores in the near future.
