Intex Aqua Star L is the first Lollipop phone from an Indian OEM

The Intex Aqua Star L smartphone has been officially launched in India with a price of Rs 6990. And while the phone may not look to be anything special, it’s basically the first from a local OEM to come with Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box.

So far, we’ve only seen companies make promises to upgrade their handsets to the new Google mobile OS and only a few have honored their word. The arrival of the Intex Aqua Star L means that other OEMs are going to quickly launch Lollipop-based smartphones to level the battlefield. The handset’s retail tag puts it in the same category as the Moto E and Redmi 1S.

However, it’s more similar to an Android One smartphone where hardware is concerned. The Intex handset looks quite appealing, but the image above can be deceiving as the phone clearly isn’t running Lollipop, but Gingerbread or Froyo from yesteryear. Of course, the company has done a bad editing job here and you’re likely to get a vanilla Android 5.0 experience.

The Aqua Star L will deliver visuals through a 5-inch display proffering a measly FWVGA resolution. And the widely popular 1.3GHz MediaTek processor based on the Cortex A7 with Mali 400 graphics will do the heavy lifting. The upside of this handset is that it offers an 8MP rear camera.

Here’s a quick overview of the Intex Aqua Star L’s key specifications:

– Android 5.0 Lollipop
– 1.3GHz quad core processor
– 1GB RAM, 8GB internal storage, 32GB expandable
– Dual SIM card slots w/ 3G HSPA
– 5-inch FWVGA LCD panel
– 2MP front camera, 8MP rear shooter
– 2000mAh battery

The Intex Aqua Star L will go on sale in black and white options starting February 16.
