A price of Rs. 38,990 has been tied to the Sony Xperia Z for India and its release date has been confirmed for March 12 by the company which officially launched the flagship device at a recent event. Select national online retailers have already put the phone up for pre-order and prospective users can choose between color options like black, white and purple.
Apart from the Z, its design variant that goes by the name ZL, has also entered the country and is up for pre-booking through Infibeam and Flipkart for Rs. 35,990. The latter’s shipping date is unclear, but is expected to fall in the third week of this month. The handsets which made their debuts at the CES 2013 in January, have toddled into the UK as well as Canada and may soon be made available in the US.
The phone that went official today wears a 5-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen powered by Mobile Bravia Engine 2 and renders visuals in 1920 x 1080p resolution. This display is made up of scratch-resistant and shatter-proof mineral glass. Besides withstanding scrapes, the sturdy device is also capable of resisting dust, splashes and spills, thanks to its IPX5 and IPX7 certifications.
Inside the gadget with dimensions of 5.47 x 2.79 x 0.31 inches, rests a Qualcomm quad core processor, operating at a speed of 1.5GHz. It features 2GB of RAM as well as 16GB onboard memory which can be expanded using a microSD card of up to 32GB capacity. It rocks Jelly Bean 4.1 out of the box, but the Japanese conglomerate may send an OTA upgrade for Android v4.2 in the future.
The integrated battery ensures that customers do not run out of power as it claims to provide talk time of close to 11 hours on a single charge and standby time of approximately 550 hours. A 13MP camera with Exmor RS sensor, auto focus, LED flash and video recording capability, dominates the rear side, while the front side accommodates a 2MP 1080p webcam for video calling purposes.
