The Sony Xperia Z release date has been confirmed for the first quarter of this year, but its price has been kept under wraps for now. Its design variant, the Xperia ZL comes encased in a smaller form factor and will also be introduced in select markets in Q1 2013 itself.
The front panel of the Xperia Z is dominated by a 5-inch multi-touch Reality display powered by Mobile Bravia Engine 2. It can render full high definition visuals in 1080 x 1920p resolution. The 4G LTE-enabled device comes armed with a powerful 13MP auto focus fast-capture camera featuring Exmor RS for mobile sensor. It boasts of HDR video for recording good-quality movies regardless of the lighting conditions. The phone also employs a 2.2MP front-mounted webcam. It is based on the Android Jelly Bean 4.1 platform and is upgradeable to version 4.2.
As for the processor, the handset has been induced with the quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset that ticks at 1.5GHz and ensures smooth multitasking even when using more than one application at the same time. There’s 2GB of RAM to accompany the processor. One of its advantages is the Battery Stamina mode which automatically shuts down apps when the screen is off in order to save up on battery life and increase the standby time by up to 4 times. The apps come back on as soon as the display is switched on.
While the durable glass display and an anti-shatter film keep scratches at bay, the IP55 and IP57 ratings work towards protecting the device from spills, splashes and dust. The phone adopts an OmniBalance design and measures merely 7.9mm in thickness. It ships with 16GB onboard memory, expandable via a microSD card of up to 32GB capacity and measures 5.47 x 2.79 x 0.31 inches. Pre-loaded with Walkman, Album and Movies apps, it offers access to the Google Play store for browsing and downloading applications as well.
