Apple iPhone 5 sales in China top 2 million in first weekend

Apple has managed to sell more than 2 million units of the iPhone 5 in China during its first weekend. And the Cupertino multinational isn’t stopping there. It plans to have the new phone in more than 100 markets by the end of December.

The much hyped phone also did well when it was launched in September this year, moving 5 million units in its first 3 days. Commenting on the China launch, Tim Cook, CEO at Apple, said that it was a new record for the company and the best sales ever in the nation over the first three days of being made available.

Let’s take a candid look at the device’s specs. First and foremost, it is significantly thinner than its predecessor, measuring 123.8mm x 58.6mm x 7.6mm in dimensions. It weighs 112 grams and sports a 4-inch widescreen multi touch display with a resolution of 1136 x 640 pixels at 326ppi.

One of the main attractions of the iPhone 5 is the iOS 6 platform it runs on, although the propriety maps application that comes along with it has received quite a bit of criticism. And Google recently announced the release of their own maps app for the device, much to users’ delight.

Then there is the 8MP primary iSight camera on the back, built using new technology. A sapphire crystal lens protector was the highlight of the snapper, but that too was subject to public outcry, with its purple flaring issue. Meanwhile, a 1.2MP FaceTime webcam has been slipped in to take care of video chatting.

Another key aspect is the inclusion of the Lightning port, a feature found on all of Apple’s latest gadgets, making it more convenient to connect to docks and for charging, what with the reversibility and all. It comes with Bluetooth 4.0, A-GPS and Wi-Fi, on the connectivity front.

Considering what the Apple device packs under the hood and the hype it has garnered, it’s not surprising that the Apple iPhone 5 saw a successful launch in China.
