$99 Samsung Chromebook by Google available for public schools this holiday season

The $99 Samsung Chromebook developed by Google will be available for public school classrooms throughout the US until December 21. The search engine giant has joined hands with DonorsChoose.org and is urging full-time public school teachers through the official Google blog, to make the most of this offer.

Teachers can visit the aforementioned website and sign up for their classrooms to take advantage of digital learning using the Series 5 laptop. This online organization directly connects budget-strapped schools to willing donors and has even collaborated with Lakeshore Learning, who happens to be the fulfillment partner of the program. People who wish to help by donating can also head to the web portal to do their bit for the initiative.

The Samsung laptop that otherwise costs $429 (approx. Rs. 23,285), is adorned with a 12.1-inch display that is said to be capable of projecting clear visuals in 1920 x 800p resolution. As the name suggests, it operates with the help of the Chrome OS and allows users to share and stay updated at all times with built-in Google apps. Complete with a web-based management console, the Google-branded device also works towards keeping students entertained.

Moreover, it is accompanied by a full-sized chiclet keyboard along with an over-sized trackpad for input flexibility. The 3G-enabled notebook weighs not more than 1.38 kilograms. It is fueled by the 1.66GHz dual core Intel Atom N570 processor which teams up with 2GB of RAM to deliver improved performance.

The Chromebook by Google is integrated with a 16GB SSD and a battery pack that keeps the device charged up for uninterrupted computing time of up to 8.5 hours at a stretch. There’s dual band Wi-Fi for wireless internet access wherever there’s an open hotspot. The gadget can be tethered to multiple peripherals and systems via 2 USB 2.0 ports and a micro VGA port. A 4-in-1 memory card slot as well as a webcam have also been embedded on it.

The Samsung Chromebook by Google is available for $99 (approx. Rs.5,375) until December 21 for public school classrooms. The price includes hardware, management and support.
