Asustek announces Eee, a Low-Cost Laptop

Asus Eee notebook Taiwan-based Asustek Computer, has announced the launch of its low-priced notebook PC, called the Eee.

The company expects to ship between three million to five million units of Eee by the end of 2008. In this year itself, Asustek expects a sale of up to 200,000 Eee computers. Asustek targets at both existing and developing markets such as governments, educational organizations, women and children.

The Eee notebook computer, which operates on the Linux operating system, will also offer a version of Microsoft’s Windows operating system by the end of the year. However, the Windows version will cost about T$1,000 (approx. Rs. 1,220) more than Linux versions.

The features of the Asustek Eee Laptop include:

  • 10/100 Mbps Ethernet
  • Wi-Fi enabled
  • 512 MB memory
  • Up to 16 GB of marvelous Flash storage
  • A webcam
  • Microphone
  • Built-in speakers
  • 3 hours of battery life
  • Asustek Chairman Jonney Shih said, “The company has high hopes for the Eee PC line, which could possibly make up as much as 20 percent of the global market for laptop PC sales by 2010.”

    Initially, the latest laptop will be available in English, in Taiwan it will roll out later in classical Chinese versions. French, German and Italian versions will follow too.

    The Eee, which will carry Asustek’s brand name, carries a price tag of 11,000 twd (approx. Rs. 13,442). Three other models of the line will hit the market before the end of next month, with separate prices of 7,999 twd (approx. Rs. 9,774) (the lowest price, with 2GB storage capacity), 9,900 twd (approx. Rs. 12,096), and 13,888 twd (approx. Rs. 16,970).
