$200 Eee PC Low-cost Laptop Unveiled by Asus

Asus Eee Laptop Yesterday, we reported about Intel and Asustek together producing the low-cost laptops. Asus has revealed the revolutionary mini $200 Eee PC at the Computex 2007, Taipen.

At the showcase, Jonney Shih, chairman and chief executive of Asus, was invited on stage to announce the “Eee PC,” a low-cost laptop designed to help spread computing to poorer regions. Intel names it as a “World Ahead” market initiative. However, the product does not replace higher-end products as they are targeted at a different segment.

The new notebook aims mostly at developing countries to provide them with access to knowledge and modern forms of education. The three Es in the Eee PC name stand for: Easy to learn, work, play; Excellent Internet experience and Excellent mobile computing experience.

Jonney Shih says, “The Eee PC will apparently connect to the Internet, as it will allow users to make VOIP [voice over IP] calls.”

“It will give them [people] the chance to access the Internet and share in the 21st century opportunity,” adds Sean Maloney, executive vice president at Intel and chief marketing and sales officer.

  • The mini notebook, Eee PC will be available later this year and the cost will range from $199-$299, depending on the feature set.
