Cool Gadgets of the Month: September 2011

Cool Gadgets

Everything goes by so fast in tech world – one day Gingerbread handsets are the biggest thing around town, the next day it’s the iPhone 5 and the day after, it’s Ice Cream Sandwich. You get the point? Wrapping up the month without running through all the cool gadgets and gizmos which deserve another mention is not the sort of thing we’d want to get used to. So here’s our take on the cool gadgets of the month for September 2011.

It all started out with Razer slipping out the BlackWidow Stealth Edition mechanical keyboard. Raring to steal gamers’ hearts with the Ultimate and Standard versions, both peripherals embed programmable keys for on-the-fly macro recording. Additionally, there are five extra macro keys placed on one side for issuing commands during a gaming session. The Ultimate packs in anti-ghosting for accommodating six simultaneous key presses anywhere on the keyset, while the other has a gaming optimized key matrix for minimized ghosting options.

Making us snap to attention not once, but twice during the course of September were the Samsung WB750 and Pentax Optio RZ18 cameras. The first extends dual capture, enabling users to shoot 1,080p full HD videos and 10MP stills at the same time. And for those who take their megapixels very seriously, Pentax’s offering integrates a 16MP sensor, its 18x optical zoom with wide angle lens equivalent to 25mm – 450mm. Tagged at $299.95 (approx. Rs. 14,315), the RZ18 shows a 3” HVGA LCD, 720p 30fps videos, a remote control sensor, Pentax Shake Reduction IS and more on the spec sheet.

Fans on the HBO vampire series, True Blood, should be happy about V-Moda letting them air their love for the show. In early September, the company came out with the limited edition V-Moda Maker Zinc Metal headphones flaunting a black zinc metal coffin pendant and a blood red transparent jewel as part of the design. If they’re not sold out already, then they can be grabbed for $150 (approx. Rs. 6,960) from the V-Moda website or HBO retail channels. Speaking of good-looking gadgets, the Intel Ultrabooks featuring Ivy Bridge processors are expected to swing onto shelves this holiday season. Extremely sleek notebooks from various OEMs are definitely on the cards, even if the pricing details cannot be ascertained at present.

As for the hottest bit of news to hit us lately, Tim Cook is apparently going to preside over the ‘Let’s Talk iPhone’ event which has been confirmed for October 4 at Apple’s Cupertino HQ. No one knows for sure whether it’s going to be an iPhone 5 or an iPhone 4S and rumor mills are busy churning out a million possibilities. At any rate, October 4 isn’t that far away. We can wait. Meanwhile, RIM hasn’t been skulking away behind the scenes and allowing other smartphones to take away the limelight. Just this week, the company joined hands with Airtel to bring the BlackBerry Curve 9360 to India for Rs. 19,990. The BlackBerry OS 7, BlackBerry 7 browser with improved WebKit and a 5MP camera with flash figure among the technical specifications.

As we got our markers to the last few days on the calendar, Samsung bounced back at us yet again. This time around, the Galaxy Tab 8.9 as well as the Galaxy Player 5.0 and 4.0 were the products making their debut. The last two feast off Gingerbread and up to 32GB expandable memory. As for the Honeycomb-powered Tab 8.9, just think of a smaller version of the Tab 10.1. Rounding it up with a gob smacking release or let’s say, releases, was Amazon. The new Amazon Kindle, Kindle Touch and Kindle Touch 3G e-readers were part of the launch which happened to include the Amazon Kindle Fire tablet, a first from these quarters. We’re talking about a 7” slate high on Android, the Amazon Silk web browser, Whispersync technology and featuring free cloud storage.

And that just about wraps up and puts a pretty red ribbon on the coolest of the gadgets which showed up in September. Have we missed out anything you’d care to remind us about?
