5th generation iPod touch gets thinner, faster, smarter

5th generation iPod Touch

Apart from launching the iPhone 5 and iPod nano 7G, the company also introduced the 5th generation iPod touch. This media player comes with a redesigned form factor and fresh features like Siri and a Lightning port.

As we reported earlier, the device will ride into town on the company’s latest iOS 6 platform with a 4-inch Retina display in tow. This touch panel runs over the gadget’s thin and lightweight anodized aluminum body that measures just about 6mm in thickness. This slim iPod weighs not more than 88 grams and draws power from the company’s A5 dual core chip.

The above mentioned SOC is said to offer roughly two times the processing power and up to seven times quicker graphics than the one seen in the earlier versions. In spite of all this, it maintains the overall battery life of the device that is capable of delivering up to 40 hours of music playback or up to 8 hours of video playback on a single charge. Moving on to the camera features, the gadget packs in a 5MP iSight AF snapper with 1080p video recording, an LED flash, face detection and panorama mode.

Another important highlight is the virtual assistant Siri application that comes pre-loaded with the device. This tool answers to queries like movie timings and restaurant locations, makes recommendations and performs actions with the help of oral commands. Needless to say, users can download a host of applications via the App Store and the iTunes Store.

Other features include iMessage, Mail, Game Center and Face Time in addition to Shared Photo Streams that enables users to share content with family and friends via iCloud. There is the AirPlay Mirroring tool that permits wireless image, video and music streaming. Also, it can be used for playing games on larger displays. Just like the iPod nano and iPhone 5, this device comes with the latest 19-pin Lightning dock connector.

The 5th generation iPod touch price is tagged at $299 (approx. Rs. 16,550) for the 32GB version and $399 (approx. Rs. 22,105) for the 64GB one. Its release date has been slated for October and it will be available via the company’s online store and retail outlets as well as through other authorized resellers. Pre-orders will commence on September 14 and potential buyers will be able to pick up the device dipped in shades of pink, yellow, blue, black and slate as well as white and silver.
