Nintendo 3DS XL arrives in the US ‘big’ on features

The Nintendo 3DS XL has hit stores in the US for a street price of $199.99 along with the New Super Mario Bros. 2 game. This version comes with a bigger form factor compared to its predecessor and wears 90 percent larger screens.

Scaling 156mm x 93mm x 22mm in dimensions when closed, the device in question weighs approximately 336 grams. It is fitted with a 4.8-inch stereoscopic 3D display on the top panel and a 4.18-inch touchscreen on the lower half. Both screens deliver resolutions of 800 x 240 pixels and 320 x 240 pixels, respectively.

The console is outfitted with a 3D Depth Slider that’s placed on the right side of the top screen. With the help of this feature, users can adjust the depth of field as per their liking. The mode can also be turned off completely in order to view content in 2D.

“The larger screens of the new Nintendo 3DS XL really bring all your games to life,” commented Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “The colors and visuals in New Super Mario Bros. 2 look great, especially when all the levels are packed full of gold coins.”

Apart from a Circle Pad, the gaming unit is equipped with a front-facing camera and two rear-facing ones. Users can take advantage of the latter two CMOS sensors to capture images in 3D. Both snappers have a single focus lens and deliver stills in a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels. There is also a stylus with an adjustable length for easy input.

The Nintendo 3DS XL price in the US is marked at $199.99 (approx. Rs. 17,490). The company has made the device available in color combinations of red and black, blue and black as well as silver and black.
