With Windows 8 tablets in the spotlight at present, a number of details are surfacing and one of them is regarding the Intel Atom processor Z2760 aka Clover Trail. The SoC is going to be the powerhouse running the new slates set to enter the scene this year.

Owing to the chipset, the overall form factor and exterior of the slabs can apparently be cut down to almost 8.5mm in thickness, or should we say thinness. It renders the body lightweight, with the new devices expected to weigh just around 1.5 pounds. This built-in technology proffers a long battery life covering over 10 hours of local HD video streaming or over 3 weeks of connected standby duration.

The complete architecture boasts of NFC compatibility along with support for an 8MP camera, Wi-Fi, 4G LTE WWAN and 3G WWAN. In terms of the processor’s principal specifications, it features two cores and employs Intel Burst and Hyper Threading technologies. The former enables ‘higher’ performance and manages heavy workloads even in smaller devices.

The latter basically plays a role in multitasking and extends support to multi-threaded applications. The chip is integrated with a graphics core having a frequency of up to 533MHz to render enhanced graphics and it is capable of encoding and decoding 1080p videos as well. The entire package is built to accommodate one external HDMI display apart from one embedded touchscreen.

The devices incorporating Intel Atom Z2760 Clover Trail include the Acer Iconic W510, VivoTab, Dell Latitude 10, Fujitsu Stylistic Q702, HP Envy x2, Lenovo ThinkPad 2, Samsung Smart PC and ZTE V98. All these tablets are expected to commence shipping around the time of the Windows 8 launch.
