Kyobo e-Reader with Qualcomm mirasol display technology launched

Sounding quite like another internationally popular tablet, the Kyobo color e-Reader was introduced yesterday by Qualcomm and Korean bookseller Kyobo Book Centre. It is being touted as the first e-Reader in the world to be incorporated with the mirasol display technology.

This tablet comes equipped with a 5.7-inch XGA 1024 x 768p mirasol display possessing a screen resolution of 223 ppi and is powered by Android 2.3 OS. Operating on a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S2 class processor, the device claims to deliver a comprehensive reading experience through the variety of books, magazines and videos that it offers.

Kyobo’s customers will be the first to enjoy the exceptional color e-reader experience and long battery life that only mirasol displays can provide,” commented Clarence Chui, senior vice president and general manager of Qualcomm MEMS Technologies.

The latest e-Reader on the block features EBS exclusive video lecture content and English language text-to-speech capabilities. It also offers users access to Kyobo’s vast ebook library containing more than 90,000 books. Readers are allowed to share content via various Korean social networking services as well as search for word, sentences and phrases with the Diotek dictionary application. Additionally, the tablet facilitates for clear reading even in bright sunlight without any glares and can apparently be utilized for weeks under typical usage.

The Kyobo e-Reader is priced at $310 (approx. Rs. 16,260) and is now available at bookstore locations across South Korea. It can also be bought for a discounted price of $265 (approx. Rs.13, 900) by members of the Kyobo Platinum Book Club.
