Sony slashing PS3 prices?

Sony PS3

The Wii has done it. Xbox 360 is expected to do it. And that perhaps makes it unavoidable for Sony to reduce prices of the PS3. According to MCV, the announcement is predicted to take place at Gamescom in August. Insiders believe that the prices can drop to £179.99 (approx Rs. 12,960), from £199.99 (approx Rs. 14,400).

So far, Sony has refused to remark on the topic saying that it ‘doesn’t comment on rumor or speculation.’ If it does announce a deduction in prices, then Microsoft is sure to get into the act. If reports are to be believed, it is already planning value-added Kinect deals. But Microsoft too chose to stay mum on the pricing issue saying that it ‘doesn’t talk about pricing plans in advance,’ perhaps indicating that they would wait and watch.

Game publishers seem to be expecting the price drop. “I would anticipate a further price cut on existing consoles prior to Christmas. It’ll probably happen around September and Gamescom may be interesting. But there’s also time for a further cut next year, before Wii U is out,” Codemasters boss Rod Cousens explained.

The console war is set to restart with the Wii having already gone for a price drop, costing just £99 (approx Rs. 7,128). The Wii prices are further expected to go down even further in Q3.

The competition based video game industry always seems to churn out surprises and we may be in for one with reports of Sony’s PS3 price reduction.
