Microsoft Zune HD now rests in peace

Zune HD Service Shut

Now that Mango has been announced, its time for the Microsoft Zune HD device to shut shop. We all love our gadgets and more often than not the latest one is on our wishlist. But we’re guessing the fate of the ‘not-so-popular’ ones is somewhat similar to that of the aforementioned Microsoft device.

As of July 1, 2011, the official store Zune Originals stated “We are no longer taking new orders for Zune Originals. To purchase a ZUNE HD device, please visit one of our retailers.”

Even though the device is declared dead, a few new apps did appear on the Zune Marketplace. On ordering of a Zune HD, users could customize its design based on their own style, giving it a unique and distinct look. All Zune services are still said to be running, including the likes of Zune video and music.

Of course there have been occasions when Microsoft hinted at the upcoming Windows Phone platform to be its successor. And with the official site now claiming that the Windows Phone 7 is also a great Zune music and video player, it does seem like the company is being rather specific on what the replacement really is.
