The Plextor PX-612U external DVD/CD writer with PlexTV which was recently announced at the CES 2012 is aimed at allowing users to access data stored on a CD or DVD even if they have no access to a PC. The PlexTV feature enables the peripheral to sync with almost any HDTV or other such displays and gadgets by means of a USB connection.

Slim in appearance and size, the PX-612U terminates the need of a PC to read a CD or a DVD. Although most HDTVs seen in the market today ship with a USB port dotting the chassis, they are limited to connecting with flash drives, hard drives, camera and other such media storage devices. They are not designed to be compatible with CD or DVD writers.

“It seems counter-intuitive that a USB-supported DVD Drive wouldn’t work with a TV, but it has to do with the code that the devices use to communicate,” said Kathy Huynh, Product Marketing Manager. “PlexTV uses a code translator to make the PX-612U appear as a hard drive to the television, making the two devices compatible.”

The Plextor device in question debuts with the PlexTV technology by Plextor which makes it possible for the writer to seamlessly connect with gadgets other than the desktop. This is enabled by the ability of this firmware to translate the signal output in a manner that it resembles a hard drive.

The Plextor PX-612U external DVD/CD writer with PlexTV release date and price details are not known yet. The company has conveyed that the product will be made commercially available in the first quarter of 2012.
