Announced in this half of the year itself, the Samsung Galaxy Y phone is now being offered in the UK by Vodafone. This Android Gingerbread smartphone arrives on the carrier with Pay monthly plans starting at £10.50 (approx. Rs. 800).

Designed to compete as an entry-level smartphone, the Galaxy Y flaunts a 3-inch capacitive touchscreen with a display 320 x 240p resolutions. Powered by an 832MHz processor, it also sports a 2MP camera on its rear. Users are offered several homescreen options which let them personalize the handset.

The phone is equipped with Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface and also provides 3G, 2G, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connectivity options. The smartphone also incorporates a microSD memory card slot and has been named according to the company’s new naming strategy announced this August. The title Y signifies that handset is crafted to fit the category of ‘Youth’-centric smartphones in the Galaxy range by Samsung.

This GPRS and EDGE enabled handset measures 104mm x 58mm x 11.5mm and weighs about 97g. With 160MB of internal storage, the memory can be expanded up to 32GB with a microSD card. The device includes Samsung’s Social Hub for serving social networking purposes as well as the Swype on-screen keyboard for convenient text input. It is capable of delivering five hours of 3G talk time with its 1200mAh battery.
