LG Goes Green with a New Solar Powered Phone

LG has taken its green initiative in the mobile phone arena with the launch of its first solar powered phone at the MWC 2009.

Though the name of the phone is not known, the eco-friendly LG phone comes equipped with a solar panel battery cover for effective solar power consumption. It is believed that the flagship model of the company’s green series of handsets is embedded with a new solar power system, which comes built-in with the battery cover.

Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company, mentioned, “Using renewable solar energy in the mobile handset is an example of our ongoing efforts to help create a safer, cleaner environment for our customers LG continues to research and invest in creating products that not only provide a better experience for consumers, but also encourage an environmentally responsible lifestyle.”

All you need to do is place the phone in an environment where the solar panel can be pointed towards the natural light. With this, the phone shows its capability to transfer solar energy into electrical energy that results in the charging of the phone.

The company claims to offer around 3 minutes of talk time on consumption of only 10 minutes of natural light. LG also stated that if the handset is exposed to the sun for long then it can gain enough power to eliminate the need of an external charging device.

However, there is little information about the technical specifications of the LG solar powered phone.

LG plans to launch the green phone in Europe by the end of this year. Price is still a mystery.
