The BlackBerry Storm smartphone has finally been launched by RIM and will be available globally with carriers Verizon Wireless and Vodaone.

Verizon Wireless is the official carrier of the Storm in the American market, whereas Vodafone will offer the smartphone in the European, Indian, Australian and New Zealand markets.

Said to be the world’s first ‘clickable’ touchscreen smartphone, the BlackBerry Storm unites the touch screen interface and clickable support enabling users to experience a touchscreen clickable access just like a physical keyboard. It takes advantage of single-touch, multi-touch and gestures. The smartphone offers intuitive and efficient application navigation, powerful communications features and global connectivity.

The American consumers will get to access Verizon’s 3G Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) Revision A (Rev. A) network, while the Vodafone customers will be entitled to make use of high-speed 3G mobile broadband networks.

“We are proud to introduce the first touch-screen based BlackBerry smartphone together with Verizon Wireless and Vodafone. The BlackBerry Storm is a revolutionary touch-screen smartphone that meets both the communications and multimedia needs of customers and solves the longstanding problem associated with typing on traditional touch-screens. Consumers and business customers alike will appreciate this unique combination of a large and vibrant screen with a truly tactile touch interface,” said Mike Lazaridis, president and co-chief executive officer at RIM.

The RIM BlackBerry Storm sports a built-in accelerometer for automatic transformation of landscape mode and portrait mode as the user rotates the handset. It also includes the company’s SureType keyboard layout that is accessible during a portrait mode and a full QWERTY keyboard layout in landscape mode. The phone also has an ambient light sensor and mechanically adjusts backlighting for ideal viewing.

Besides, the Storm features a 3.25-inch glass lens with 480 x 360 resolution at 184 ppi, a 3.2 megapixel camera with zoom, auto focus and a powerful functionality, video recording and playback capabilities and an in-built GPS with geotagging support. The other features include 1 GB internal memory, microSD/SDHD memory card support, a media player with 11 preset filters, a 3.5 mm stereo headset jack, compatibility with Bluetooth stereo audio profile (A2DP/AVRCP) and dedicated volume controls.

RIM has added a removable and rechargeable 1400 mAhr battery which delivers an operation time of nearly 6 hours of talk time on 3G networks and 15 days of standby time.

The price of BlackBerry Storm smartphone has not been revealed yet.
