Speculations are rife that prototypes of smartphones and tablets operating on the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor may be something to watch out for at the MWC 2012. Specifically, the S4 camera is garnering a lot of attention lately, especially since it started showing off its Image Signal Processor (ISP) capability.

The imaging muscle of the Qualcomm processor will allow the given smartphone or tablet to be of as much use as a digital camera. According to a post on the official Qualcomm blog, an S4 device integrated with a camera is expected to be able to deliver nearly 20MP in stills along with 1080p video capture.

Moreover, the system is touted to support 3 cameras, where the third snapper may be used for 3D capture. Apparently, there is more room for enhanced precision with S4 cameras in terms of smile degree, gaze estimation and blink detection. This attribute can be credited to the company’s 3A camera technology comprising a host of features like auto white, autofocus and auto exposure.

Some other traits of the ISP are inclusive of image stabilization, active Range-Finding and zero shutter lag. Furthermore, users can control apps on smartphones or other devices operating on the S4 by means of gestures. A simple wave of the hand, a nod or a movement of the body is expected to deliver intuitive interaction with gaming and other apps.

Apart from the main hardware specifications, the camera offered by devices operating on S4 processors is touted to be supported by a software ecosystem too. Additions like the augmented reality SDK and Qualcomm’s FastCV are slated to improve the performance of the camera in terms of inducing new experiences.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor should be unveiled at the MWC 2012.
