Sony Blu-ray laser Sony has collaborated with Japan-based Nichia to develop a new laser unit that is just 3mm thick. Claiming to be the world’s smallest Blu-ray reader/writer module, this device would help manufacturers to shrink the hardware in their Blu-ray drives.

Boasting to be less costly than existing models, Sony Blu-ray lasers can hold dual-layer Blu-ray disks and disks with organic dye in the recording layers.

Moreover, organic disks also have the ability to be produced from existing DVD production lines.

It is also said that this new thinner Blu-ray laser might work for Sony PS3, slashing manufacturing costs along with the size of the console. This is a win-win situation for Sony.

Sony confidently mentioned that this 3mm thick can allow Blu-ray functionality to become mainstream in standard 9.5mm laptop drives.

Sadly, the price of the new module is not revealed by Sony.
