Garmin delays launch of Nuvifone GPS device until 2009

Garmin Nuvifone

Few months back, Garmin had announced it’s Nuvifone, a GPS device which featured phone functionality.

The device was expected to hit the market in Q3 of 2008.

Now it seems that the launch of the much-hyped Garmin Nuvifone device has been postponed till the first half of 2009.

The device is considered to be the first GPS system that incorporates phone functionality. The Garmin Nuvifone will not been seen on the shelves this year, apparently the delay was caused due to design changes being made to meet carrier specific requirements.

According to the statement released Garmin, “While we had hoped to have carrier launches in the fourth quarter, we have found that meeting some of the carrier specific requirements will take longer than anticipated. We remain pleased with carrier interest in the device and are working toward making necessary design changes to meet their requirements.”

Coming to the gizmo’s attributes; the Nuvifone is equipped with the GPS functionality, an internet browser, a built-in video camera, touchscreen interface and obviously the mobile phone capabilities. The telephonic GPS unit is compatible with MP3 and MPEG4, AAC player.
