Garmin nüvifone, a GPS Device with Phone Functionality, launched

Garmin nüvifone GPS navigation system manufacturer Garmin has taken GPS devices to the next level with its new innovative product. Called nüvifone, the latest GPS unit comes with a unique feature like the telephony function.

Earlier when I saw the news, I thought there is some typo. I believed that Garmin is entering into the mobile phone industry with its first mobile phone with GPS capabilities. But I was mistaken, Garmin moves ahead in the GPS category with the new telephony functioned GPS navigator.

Featuring a touchscreen interface, this sleek phone-enabled GPS allows the owner to keep track of the roads and even stay connected with their friends and family via one device.

The nüvifone comes with 3.5G mobile phone capability, Internet browser, 3.5-inch touchscreen, GPS connection, built-in video camera and support for MP3, MPEG4 and AAC file formats.

“The nüvifone is an all-in-one device offering unmatched integration of utility and function in a single mobile device. This is the breakthrough product that cell phone and GPS users around the world have been longing for – a single device that does it all,” said Cliff Pemble, Garmin’s president and COO.

Garmin offers GPS functions such as:

  • Google local search capability
  • “Where am I?” feature to locate nearest hospitals, police stations and gas stations
  • Preloaded maps of North America, Eastern and Western Europe
  • The company’s Garmin Online feature ensures a constant update of important information that includes real-time traffic, fuel prices, stock prices, sport scores, news reports, local events and weather forecasts.

Expected to roll out by third quarter of 2008, Garmin keeps the price of the nüvifone telephony GPS with itself.
