With the 55-inch LG OLED TV panel, the company has broken the mold to effectively deploy OLED technology into larger panels. This ‘world’s largest’ OLED TV will be showcased at the CES to be held in January, next year.

As Engadget mentions, LG had promised to introduce the 55-inch variant of the TV and now the company seems all set for its commercial launch. Offering a contrast ratio of 100,000:1, the display’s good image quality is attributed to high reaction velocity and an improved color range compared to contemporary LCD panels. The extremely slim 5mm display does not require a light source and helps conserving power as the integrated diodes can be switched on or off.

“Our objective has always been to actively define and lead emerging display technology markets. Although OLED technology is seen as the future of TV display, the technology has been limited to smaller display sizes and by high costs, until now. LG Display’s 55-inch OLED TV panel has overcome these barriers,” quoted Dr. Sang Beom Han, CEO and Executive Vice President of LG Display.

Small sized LED displays generally utilize Low Temperature Poly Silicon (LTPS) technology for the backplane, while the 55-inch LG OLED TV panel employs Oxide TFT technology. This technology deployed by the company, is very similar to the conventional TFT process, except that the former operates with oxide as opposed to Amorphous Silicon used in the latter. The oxide type is said to augment the image quality while keeping the costs low.

Furthermore, the White OLED (WOLED) of this 55-inch HDTV cuts down on the error rate for higher productivity and its small pixels results in a clear ‘ultra definition’ screen. This eco-friendly system also reduces the power consumption when browsing the web through smart TVs.

The 55-inch LG OLED TV panel will be displayed at the CES starting from January 9.
