Sigma DP1 Merrill and DP2 Merrill compact cameras announced

Sigma DP1 Merrill

The freshest tools vying for the attention of photography enthusiasts are the newly declared Sigma DP1 Merrill and DP2 Merrill compact cameras. Both the devices feature Foveon X3 Direct Image Sensor technology co-created by Richard ‘Dick’ Merrill, in honor of whom the cameras have been named.

Equipped with the APS-C sized 46MP X3 image sensor, the cameras give users the option of employing autofocus, manual focus or focus-lock for enabling the capture of different types of photographs. It lets them shoot VGA movies possessing resolutions of 640 × 480p at 30fps and change settings of the diaphragm, shutter speed and menu via the command dial button. While the DP1 Merrill comes integrated with a 19mm F2.8 lens, the DP2 Merrill sports a 30mm F2.8 lens.

“This revolutionary image capture system reflects both the artistic and technological sides of Merrill’s personality. As an expression of Sigma’s passion for photography and in honor of Dick Merrill’s genius, we have named the latest generation of the Foveon X3 Direct Image Sensor the Foveon Merrill,” quipped Kazuto Yamaki, CEO of Sigma Corporation.

Sigma DP2 Merrill

The photography tools are incorporated with Sigma Photo Pro processing software which converts RAW data in a quick and easy manner through a bunch of functions like JPEG conversion, exposure picker, print, batch white balance settings and loupe. Some of the other features include a dual, three-layer responsive ultimate engine with two TRUE II processors, telecentric fixed lenses, FLD glass and super multi layer coating which minimizes flare and ghosting effects, among many others.

The Sigma DP1 Merrill and DP2 Merrill release date and price details have not yet been revealed.
