BT ties-up with FON to Build Largest Wi-Fi Community

BT and FON Logos UK based British Telecom (BT) has announced its tie-up with Wi-Fi sharing service Fon to offer its consumers the opportunity to join its community of people that share their internet connections. Coming together, the two companies have launched BT FON, the world’s largest Wi-Fi community.

BT’s three million Total Broadband customers will be invited to join the global community of people sharing their broadband.

New subscribers will become the part of an existing community of 500,000 members and will also be able to access more than 190,000 FON hotspots worldwide.

The aim of BT FON is to build the world’s largest Wi-Fi community. For building such a community the most important thing is to have every member share a small section of their home broadband connection, by opening up a separate, secure channel on their wireless router. By this they will be able to enjoy everyone else’s shared bandwidth.

The subscribers will get an access to hotspot network BT Openzone, including 12 Wireless Cities on free of cost.

“Today we are launching a people’s network of Wi-Fi, which could one day cover every street in Britain,” said Gavin Patterson, BT Group managing director.

“We are giving our millions of Total Broadband customers a choice and an opportunity. If they are prepared to securely share a little of their broadband, they can share the broadband at hundreds of thousands of FON and BT Openzone hotspots today, without paying a penny,” continued Patterson.

This ground breaking concept of a vast Wi-Fi community will be developed by individuals and not a large corporate enterprise.
