Seagate Barracuda hard drive series restructured, refreshed with updates

Seagate Barracuda New

The Seagate Barracuda range of hard drives will now be organized under a common head, thus abandoning its sub-categories like Green and XT. Also, the entire refreshed line-up will now boast of new updates, some of which will be borrowed from the called off product branding.

The Seagate Barracuda hard drives are designed to function with a variety of gadgets like desktops, towers or all-in-one personal computers, workstations, home and small business servers, NAS devices, direct-attached storage expansion as also home and small-business RAID solutions. The most significant and highlighted revival for this new range is that it now comes with 1TB per disk platter of storage space.

“A simpler desktop drive product family is exactly what Seagate customers are asking for,” cited Scott Horn, vice president of Marketing, Seagate. “The new Barracuda family reflects the reality that end-users want a full range of hard drive capacities and as much performance as we can give them to help manage and store massive amounts of digital content. In addition, our OEM and channel customers want to reduce overhead costs by having fewer product lines to qualify and manage in their inventory.”

Other significant changes in this new batch include a SATA 6GB/second interface, 7200RPM spin speed and up to 64MB cache to deliver better performance across all capacities. Also, the SmartAlign technology by Seagate, which was exclusive to the Barracuda Green series until now, will be embedded in the entire new range. The company promises eco-friendliness by means of complying with the REACH standards and tailoring the series to be halogen-free.

Although there is no word on the official date, the new Seagate Barracuda is first expected to be made available through online retailers like Amazon, CDW, Newegg and TigerDirect. Also, the production of the Green line-up is expected to cease completely by February 2012.
