Western Digital ships 9.5mm high notebook hard drive

Western Digital has announced the availability of the 9.5mm high notebook hard drive called the Western Digital Scorpio Blue. This 2.5-inch drive boasts of a 640GB storage capacity. It is said to be highest capacity 2.5-inch drive available in the market. Well, this announcement from the company follows the launch of the TV Mini Media player.

The Western Digital Scorpio Blue is a 640GB drive that features 320GB per-platter technology. The drive has been specifically designed for mainstream notebook computers. It claims to reduce the power consumption by approximately 30 percent as compared to previous generation drives. The Scorpio is said to the best storage solution for notebooks available in the market at present.

“WD continues to provide the market with industry-leading capacity points so consumers and business professionals can take advantage of the ever increasing need to store rich media content, such as high resolution photos, HD videos and music,” said Jim Morris, WD’s vice president and general manager of client systems. “Our industry-leading power efficiency, achieved without compromise to performance, is a further example of the added features and value that our customers have come to expect from WD.”

The Western Digital Scorpio Blue is compatible with a host of portable devices that require an extended battery life along with cool and quite operation. The WhisperDrive feature of this drive claims to combine the state-of-the-art seeking algorithms to achieve quite performance. The ShockGuard technology combines firmware and hardware advancements so as to render the drive shockproof while the IntelliSeek is said to lower power consumption, noise and vibrations by calculating optimum seek speeds.

Adorned by advanced features, the WD Scorpio Blue is now available for purchase through select distributors and resellers. The hard drive is covered by a three year limited warranty and will retail for around $149 (approx. Rs. 7,210).
