WD attaches customizable e-label to My Book Elite external HD

My Book Elite

A lot of people probably mark their portables HDs with sticky labels or hand-scribbled notes stating their ownership and contents stored within the drive. WD has introduced the My Book Elite portable HD featuring an e-label that can be customized and remains visible even when the device is unplugged.

The e-label is displayed aesthetically on the drive’s spine. This e-paper enabled label gives an indicator of what is stored in the drive, how much more free space is available and if the device is locked by the WD SmartWare feature. The contents of the label can be changed as frequently as the user prefers to do so.

The HD is endowed with SmartWare to provide automatic and continuous backup. The user-viewable backup process starts up as soon as the drive is plugged in. Every time files are changes or added, the backup process is carried out automatically. Important data can be traced back to its original position and rescued whether it has been lost or written over. The 256-bit hardware-based encryption function scrambles files before they are stored in the system to ensure effective data protection. These files can be accessed only when provided with the user-selected security password.

“The new My Book Elite drives’ unique new e-label smart display and integrated WD SmartWare software give consumers an elegant and practical way to organize their content while enjoying the peace of mind that their data is backed up and secure. Even when the My Book Elite drive is unplugged, consumers can easily see at-a-glance what is stored on their drive, how much capacity is available and whether the drive is locked,” explained Dale Pistilli, VP of marketing for WD’s branded products group.

The device is NTFS formatted for Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 compatibility. It has a USB 2.0 interface and comes in capacities of 1TB, 1.5TB and 2TB. WD GreenPower technology claims to reduce the drive’s electricity consumption to approximately 70% of that of its counterparts. The HD turns on and off with the user’s PC and also goes into sleep mode when idle to save energy. The control center permits the user to run diagnostics, set drive security as also manage power settings.

My Book Elite is out in stores and online between $169.99 (approx. Rs.7,928) to $279.99 (approx. Rs.13,063), depending on the different storage capacities and comes with a 3-year warranty.
