Kingston DataTraveler 120 32GB Review: A USB 2.0 flash drive dipped in angelic white hue

Kingston DataTraveler 120 32GB

Now-a-days, loading gigantic amounts of data in pockets for months is far simpler than carrying a couple of kilograms and walking a mile. If you’ve figured it out right, then we are clearly speaking about external storage devices and precisely flash drives. These ultra- portable devices cozily sit in pockets and hand purses. One such solution descends from Kingston’s throne to reach us. As we flip Kingston’s DataTraveler 120 32GB in our review pans, read on to know more.

This storage device comes packed in a secure plastic casing that snugly fits the device. With no accompaniments whatsoever (not that we needed any), its packaging has been scribbled with user information from the company. Dipped in angelic white hue, it barely requires 2.3” (W) x 0.9” (D) x 0.4” (H) space. The all-plastic flash drive takes almost a rectangular form with Kingston etched on one side and the other side shows a shiny strip that runs along its middle portion. The shimmery maroon, two-toned silver shades and plain silver cover form this strip which has the product name printed in white. This enclosure can be picked in several other color combinations with varying storage capacities. Besides, the flash drive itself can be picked in various other colors and storage capacities from 4GB up to 32GB.

In horizontal orientation, the upper edge is smooth and rounded, its right side has been pierced with a lanyard slot while the left one has room for the pull-out connector. The lower edge comes integrated with a push-out gray button. On holding it vertically, the Data Traveler 120 shows somewhat book-like design. The design is neat and we really liked the white sober hue compared to the other shades that the device flashes. However, some may not agree as the white shade is prone to get dirty quickly. The push button works smoothly and you don’t need to exert too much pressure either. The push button comes with a locking mechanism that helps hold it in the right position when in use as well as not in use. The cap-less design is highly appreciated as one does not have to worry about losing the cap and renders the device within safe doors.

DataTraveler 120

The lightweight and sleek storage device with simple plug and play mechanism is easy to use. The flash drive offers compatibility with Windows Vista, XP, Mac and Linux. According to its spec sheet, it can withstand operating temperatures from 0°C to 60°C while storage temperatures from -20°C to 85°C.

On connecting it to your machine, an LED glows past the logo sketched on the device. The DataTraveler 120 could transfer 1GB of data in 1 minute 8 seconds on our Asus notebook running on Intel Core i7. Though it started off at 15Mbps, after a few seconds the transfer rate settled at 13.3Mbps. Keeping in view the advent of USB 3.0 and the increasing number of notebooks/netbooks employing the USB 3.0 port, we would love to see an upgraded 3.0 version of the device.

The good looking device could be a delight to clutch but the transfer rates offered are no different compared to some of the flash drive we’ve got to lay our hands on recently. Users can hold onto its cap-less design and lanyard slot. The Kingston DataTraveler 120 32GB carries an approx MRP of Rs. 4590. It gets a rating of 7 out of 10 from us.
