Toshiba has announced its latest series of HDDs called Toshiba MK01GRRB/R which provides a 15,000RPM spin speed, 6Gb/s SAS interface and capacity of 300GB. The drives in the lineup are being touted as the highest-capacity 2.5 inch enterprise-class devices in the industry.
The devices in this new series offer drive-based encryption which are said to be useful for companies to manage data security. Measuring 69.8mm x 100.4mm x 15mm, the self-encryption technology that these 2.5-inch drives possess provides simple and total security of data sans any performance impact. This enables organizations to crypto-graphically erase protected data securely as well as return, service, repurpose and retire the drives without long data overwrite operations or physical destruction of the device.
Joel Hagberg, vice president of marketing at Toshiba’s Storage Products Business Unit stated, “Enterprise customers are increasingly satisfying their performance and capacity needs with power efficient small form factor drives. Enterprise drives with the latest self-encryption features are helping data centers to more cost-effectively achieve compliance with information security mandates. Toshiba small form factor enterprise drives deliver the performance, capacity and security features IT administrators require for today’s mission critical server, storage and cloud appliance markets.â€
These drives employ an improved power condition state that minimizes drive spin when in an idle state. This helps in reducing power consumption, thus leading to comparably lower heat dissipation and cost effectiveness along with increased system stability. Additionally, the weight is said to tip the scale at no higher than 225g.
Details regarding the price and availability of the Toshiba MK01GRRB/R HDD series have not yet been revealed.
