Indian Government Bans Certain BlackBerry Services, Tata Goes Ahead with it

BlackBerry Service, logos A new twist has occurred in the BlackBerry issue. Recently, the Indian Government had announced to ban certain BlackBerry services until a monitoring system is not finalized. However, Tata Teleservices has planned to move on with the launch of the BlackBerry service for its subscribers before attaining government permission.

TTSL wrote a letter to DoT stating, “As you are aware, various operators have been offering BlackBerry services to their customers since a number of years. However, TTSL has got stranded after we applied for clearance, resulting in a significant loss of business opportunity and recurring revenues for last quite a few months.”

Further added, “We are proceeding with the rollout of BlackBerry services and undertake that whatever solution is arrived at by the government through its deliberations with the BlackBerry suppliers and the operators currently offering such services will be applicable to us also, in the manner that it is made applicable to the other operators.”

The leading company also mentioned that they appreciate that there are security concerns and issues on the subject of lawful interception.

Apparently, Tata took this step due to the significant loss of business opportunity and recurring revenues. Before Airtel, BPL and Reliance Communications, Tata was incidentally the first operator who had sought permission to launch the services in India. These network operators never sought the government’s approval for introducing the services.
