India to Achieve 500 million Mobile Phone Consumers by 2010

India and phones According to Nokia, India will probably notice more than 500 million mobile phone users by 2010. Out of which, 60 million will have mobile video capability and 100 million would prefer mobile music services.

At the Goafest conclave, vice-president and managing director Nokia India, D Shivakumar, predicted that half the subscribers would be accessing the internet through their mobile phone. He foresees, “Mobile phones are not just about voice anymore. Services delivered through mobiles would open up a big opportunity for the advertisers in India with a huge untapped potential.”

His evaluation depends on the three sections: The top end of the market will be limited to some 50 million customers; the mid-range (value oriented customers) would contribute around 150 million subscribers; and the third tier, which is claimed to be unique to India, is expected to be dominated by low cost basic handsets with minimal functionality.

The immense growth will be profitable to advertisers, considering mobile phone as a new advertising medium.
