OMTP intros Micro-USB Standard Connector for Mobile Devices

Having an array of mobile devices from different brands means having that many cables to plug -in for charging and USBs for data transfer etc. This actually annoys most of us looking at the enormous jumbled wires.

OMTP logo and USB The Open Mobile Terminal Platform (OMTP) along with leading mobile companies such as Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and LG, who are members of OMTP, has announced the micro USB connector that works as a standard and common connector for mobile phones.

The future phone models that will be manufactured by the above mentioned mobile makers will adopt the common connector standard of micro-USB while developing their handsets.

Markku Verkama, Director of Portfolio Planning at Nokia Technology Platforms, said, “The OMTP’s work to bring consensus for what is such a simple yet significant recommendation will have wide reaching benefit. With the reduction of cables needed for mobile data connectivity, we can further enhance user experiences in our devices while reducing the burden to the environment.”

Tim Raby, Managing Director OMTP explained, “OMTP members are keen to pursue the single cable connectivity development due to its multiple benefits. We see these recommendations as a clear and demonstrable example of the work we are doing to make the mobile experience less confusing, less complicated and easier for consumers.”

However, there are many devices that already feature mini USB, namely the Motorola Q, various HTC Pocket PC and Smartphones, Blackberries and Bluetooth headsets among others.

Hopefully, this connector will surely eliminate the problem that arises due to countless wireless. However, the micro-USB standard connector will roll out expensively as compared to the variety of other mini USB devices.

The USB implementer Forum introduced the Micro-USB eight months ago and it is around half the height of a Mini-USB connector.
