Mozilla to develop FireFox Browser Application on Mobile Device

Mozilla FireFox on Mobile Mozilla Corp. has announced plans to develop a version of FireFox for mobile phones. The company has also hired two new developers for the project. One is Christian Sejersen, who recently led browsers at mobile browser developer Openwave. Brad Lassey is the other name who has joined Mozilla from France Telecom’s research-and-development group.

Mike Schroepfer, Mozilla’s Vice President of Engineering, expressed “People ask us all the time about what Mozilla’s going to do about the mobile web and I’m very excited to announce that we plan to rock it. We are serious about bringing the Firefox experience and technology to mobile devices. Bringing Firefox add-ons, the Mozilla platform, open source, and a large and passionate community to the closed and fragmented mobile platform will do the world some serious good.”

The mobile version of FireFox will operate much like the desktop that includes support for XUL and extensions. Moreover, it is said the development team is also planning of portability options that could allow users to easily port preferences, bookmarks and many more features between the mobile and the desktop.

Mozilla has also planned to add mobile devices to the first class/tier-1 platform set for Mozilla 2, the company’s all-in-one Internet application suite.

With this launch, Mozilla is does not plan to further develop Minimo, a Mozilla-based mobile browser for Windows Mobile devices.
