Giesecke & Devrient nano-SIM card claims to be world’s smallest

Nano-SIM Card

A minute offering introduced by Munich-based company Giesecke & Devrient that goes by the name of the nano-SIM is being touted as the world’s slimmest SIM card. Claiming to be merely one-third the size of the micro-SIM, it is almost 60 percent smaller than the average SIM card available in today’s markets.

G&D says that their latest card will enable manufacturers to build mobile devices that are thinner and with a more enhanced performance than the existing ones in stores today. Measuring 12mm x 9mm, the little new SIM card is about 30 percent tinier than the micro-SIM. It is slated to arrive with an adapter solution which would allow backward compatibility with older devices.

“The invention of the SIM card remains a milestone in the history of G&D. With the nano-SIM, we have shown how this development can move closer to perfection,” commented Axel Deininger, Head of G&D’s Secure Devices division.

Owing to its ultra slim form, this SIM card will occupy very less space in a mobile device. Thus there would be more potential to accommodate other mobile phone components such as larger memory storage or bigger batteries. According to the company, its research team had to face numerous technical hurdles during the process of decreasing the thickness of the SIM card by almost 15 percent.

The G&D nano-SIM card is currently being showcased at the Cartes & IDentification 2011 trade show taking place in Paris. It will undergo standardization through the ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) by the end of 2011.
