Apple MacBook Air, the World’s Thinnest Notebook Unveiled in India

I always wanted a device that is not too heavy for me to carry and weighs a little less enabling easy portability. This wish has been fulfilled with the new ultra-thin, ultra-portable, and ultra unlike anything else, notebook PC.

Apple has announced the launch of its latest notebook from the MacBook series at an event held at Taj Presidency, Mumbai, India. Called the MacBook Air, it measures an extraordinary 0.16-inches and its maximum height is 0.76-inches, thereby claiming to be the world’s thinnest notebook.

Powered by 1.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, the basic features of the Air include 13.3-inch LED-Backlit glossy widescreen display with a resolution of 1280×800 pixels, 2GB of 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, 80GB HDD and Sudden Motion Sensor.

It also comes with an integrated iSight video camera, full-size and backlit keyboard and spacious trackpad with multi-touch gesture support such as ‘Pinch’ for enlarging or descending the pictures’ size, ‘Rotate’ to rotate the images up side down or left to right, and ‘Swipe’ to swipe the photo out and get the new one in, into web pages in Safari.

According to the report, Apple has incorporated mercury-free LCD display with arsenic-free glass as well as brominated flame retardant-free material and PVC-free internal cables.

    “We’ve built the world’s thinnest notebook – without sacrificing a full-size keyboard or a full-size 13-inch display. When you first see MacBook Air, it’s hard to believe it’s a high-performance notebook with a full-size keyboard and display. But it is,” expressed Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO.

    With micro-DVI port, consumers are allowed to connect the notebook to Apple’s 20-inch or 23-inch Cinema Display for linking desktop, projectors or other displays through DVI, VGA, Composite and S-video adapters.

    Other applications are as follows:

  • iLife ’08 has been enhanced with iPhoto and revamped iMovie to incorporate in the new .Mac Web Gallery for video and photo sharing.
  • Supporting Leopard OS, it also comes with a Time Machine that ensure back up of important data.
  • Finder enables users to browse or share file between multiple Macs.
  • Quick Look to view files without the need of opening an application
  • Spaces allows crating group of application and switching between them
  • My Mac feature helps to browse and operate files on their home PC from MacBook Air via internet while traveling
  • Furthermore, this ultra-slim notebook is equipped with Apple’s Migration Assistant software, which has the ability to transfer files, application and preferences to MacBook Air from the old Mac PC through wireless network. It also sports MacBook Air SuperDrive that works with the help of MacBook Air’s USB port, doing away with a separate power adapter.

    Interestingly, Time Capsule is also included to wirelessly backup files, eliminating the requirement of optical drive. You can also remotely access computer, to wirelessly install software applications on the Air.

    “Bring Time Capsule home, plug in, click a few buttons on your Macs and voila – all the Macs in your house are being backed up automatically, every hour of every day. With Time Capsule and Time Machine, all your irreplaceable photos, movies and documents are automatically protected and incredibly easy to retrieve of they are very lost,” added Jobs.

    Time Capsule features dual-band antennas for 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz frequencies, 3 GB LAN ports, 1 GB Ethernet WAN port, 1 USB 2.0 port, Wi-Fi Protected Access, 128-bit WEP encryption, a built-in NAT firewall that is compatible with NAT-PMP for features such as Back to My Mac.

    Expected to roll out in the Indian market in two weeks through Apple authorized resellers, the Apple MacBook Air notebook carry a estimated price of Rs 96,100. The Time Capsule is available in two configuration; 500GB for Rs. 16,700 and 1TB for Rs. 27,200.
