Toshiba to Withdraw from HD DVD Format?

Toshiba Blu-ray and HD DVD Two days back Wal-Mart had signed off from the HDD DVD market. Now, Toshiba has similar plans as it has started evaluating HD DVD business strategy. However, the Japanese electronics manufacturer has not taken any decision as yet.

HD DVD seems to be loosing its position and could be defeated by rival Blu-ray technology. HD DVD standard of next-generation video format has experienced serious competition against Sony’s Blu-ray discs in the retail battle.

The decision to abandon the HD DVD format is due to the Hollywood studios and retailers that prefer to go exclusively with Blu-ray, which has the ability to store more data as compared to HD DVD.

Now, Toshiba has to do some serious thinking and consider many aspects before reaching the bottom-line. If the company plans to discontinue the HD DVD format, it is likely to lose tens of billions of yen.

However, there are still many companies that includes Microsoft, Intel, Universal Home Studios and Paramount Home Entertainment, who support HD DVDs. The coming days would inform us whether HD DVDs are going through its last phase of live or not.
