The Sony PlayStation Vita portable handheld gaming system was unveiled at an event held yesterday in Mumbai, India. Besides an on-the-go gaming experience, the device claims to offer users interactive social gaming features and keep them connected with fellow players.

The Wi-Fi and 3G enabled handheld gaming console sports a 5-inch OLED touchscreen as well as a rear touchpad. Deployed with a motion sensor and a microphone, it comes armed with a rear camera along with a front facing snapper accompanied by dual analog sticks. The access to the PlayStation Network not only lets users interact with other gamers, but also allows cross-platform play with the PS3.

“With the launch of the PS Vita, we are determined to deliver the most advanced, powerful and connected portable gaming experience India has ever seen. For the first time ever Indian consumers will get to experience compelling PS3 console-like gameplay on-the-go, while staying connected with their favorite entertainment and social networking applications through 3G and Wi-Fi support. It is clear that PS Vita is making a phenomenal impression on gamers across the world and we are proud to bring this into India,” commented Atindriya Bose, Country Manager – PlayStation.

Some other social features include a Live Area for information regarding downloads, news stories, games or promotions and a dedicated area for status updates. It can also be used for virtual meetings as the device is pre-loaded with the Near application, while Party helps people to engage in voice or text interaction even during a game. The Cross-Platform Play function can be used to integrate the gameplay from PS Vita to PS3.

And if that’s not enough, the Sony PlayStation Vita is loaded with games like Uncharted: Golden Abyss, WipEout 2048 and Reality Fighters. Some other titles such as Little Deviants, Everybody’s Golf, Ninja Gaiden, Virtua Tennis 4: World Tour Edition and many more form a part of the console accompaniments too.

The Sony PlayStation Vita prices for the Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 3G variants are tagged at Rs. 19,990 and Rs. 24,990, respectively.
