Nintendo Wii and DS Tops the sales of Gaming Segment for December 2007: NPD Group

Nintendo Wii and DS In the race of selling more videogame softwares, the biggest players – Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony have seen a steady increase in this sector. A 36% growth has been noticed in December compared to last year, in US. Sales of game hardware grew 17% as consumers continued to snap up next-generation consoles from Nintendo, Sony Corp. and Microsoft Corp.

Nintendo’s Wii has ranked first with its sales reaching 1.35 million units for the month, second in the position was Microsoft Xbox 360 that marked a sales of 1.26 million units, while the PlayStation 3 achieved 797,600 units.

Talking about the entire year’s sale, Nintendo Wii experienced early 6.3 million unit sales, domestically as compared to 4.6 million units for the Xbox 360 and nearly 2.6 million units for the PS3.

Coming to the handheld category, the sale of Nintendo’s DS reached 8.5 million, whereas the Sony PSP hit the 3.8 million mark, for the year.

Thanks to top selling games such as ‘Call of Duty 4’ that moved nearly 1.5 million units, ‘Guitar Hero III’ for the PlayStation 2, which moved 1.25 million units, Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy’ claimed 1.4 million units, while its ‘Wii Play’ title sold more than one million units and ‘Madden NFL 08’ noticed 655,000 units sold for the PS2, December 2007 maintained a significant growth in the gaming industry.

Microsoft’s ‘Halo 3’ was claimed to be the best-selling game title as it achieved around 4.8 million units sale growth in the U.S. ‘Wii Play’ sold more than 4.1 million units, while “Call of Duty 4” marked three million units.
