Displax Multitouch Globe presents big touchscreen on a dome shape

Mowing over flat screen displays, a certain European manufacturer has decided to showcase something new in the touchscreen category, titled Displax Multitouch Globe. As the name implies, this multi-touch screen is shaped like a dome to offer a more intuitive and fresh design.

The touch sensitive surface is capable of recognizing up to six simultaneous gestures on its 120cm body. The diameter of this globe measures 1 meter, or approximately 40 inches. While the company points out industries like museums, geographical information systems, TV networks and entertainment facilities where devices like these can be put to good use, it also mentions that users can deploy the technology for various other purposes too.

Touted to be the first ever multi-touch, projected, capacitive spherical surface, it leans on the company’s very own technology to enhance its display, which is now available in the form of a transparent flexible polymer film. This can be employed to convert a non-conductive plane surface to a multi-touch capable one. To suit the projection needs of a spherical interface, the UI makes use of a projector as well as a particular fish-eye lens.

While the company has announced that the device is fully developed and ready to roll, it is not being made commercially available yet. Before that happens, the Multitouch Globe will be flaunted at the Integrated Systems Europe 2012 which is scheduled to happen in Amsterdam, Netherlands this year. The trade show will take place from January 31 to February 2.

The Displax Multitouch Globe release date and price have not been disclosed by the company.
