RGB laser light source module proffered for large screen projectors

Sony RGB laser

Projectors are an integral part of an individual’s life and can be utilized in various places and organizations like schools, offices, boardrooms, mass gatherings, etc. Now Sony Corporation revealed that a new RGB laser light source module is currently under development for large screen projectors like digital cinema projectors. The offering features high power lasers in primary three hues namely red, green and blue (RGB) complete with a combined output power of 21W. All this is contained within a single package which measures just 530cc.

The red and blue lasers are a result of the utilization of semiconductor diodes while the green is obtained by using a small high power solid-state SHG laser. The red, green and blue lasers generate 10W, 6W and 5W respectively finally amounting to a combined number of 21W. The energy conversion ratios range from 15 to 22% and also realize low energy consumption.

The newly formulated module can be employed for various projectors like 1,000 lumen home theater projectors, digital cinema projectors and 10,000 lumen large screen projectors. The offering seamlessly replaces the xenon lamps that are currently espied within the projectors found today. The benefits of this replacement are high according to the company. The total size sports a total measurement of 152mm x 114mm x 30.5mm.

The vital features exuberated by projectors that use this module include higher brightness attained by stacking many modules together as well as an extended light source lifespan. Other benefits include reduced power consumption of 110W at 5,000 lumen output, higher contrast and wider color gamut as well as miniaturization of optical components like prisms and such. The laser-based light source offers users an extended lifetime of more than 10,000 hours which is between 3 to 20 times longer when pitted against xenon lamps.

The company is set to transfer the technology pertaining to the module to Sony Manufacturing Systems Corporation and start sample shipments by second half of this year.
