AUO gets its 32” LCD TV Carbon Footprint verified

Accountability seems to be the new mantra in the CE industry. More and more companies are opting for a greener method of manufacturing goods in order to entice concerned citizens. AUO has now declared certification of their 32” LCD TV according to the international PAS2050: 2008 carbon footprint standard.

Based on the ISO 14044 protocol, the carbon footprint project assesses the environmental effect of the device’s life cycle from the raw material stage right through production, delivery, consumer utility, and disposal or recycling. The company claims that their LCD uses 30% less electricity than its counterparts and is compliant of EuP: 2010 and Energy Star 3.0 standards. The TV consists of 4 u-shaped tubes as opposed to the 16 straight tubes normally used in manufacturing this appliance. Also, the mercury usage has been reduced to 18%. These new changes were introduced to ensure that the gadget meets the specified criterion required for verification.

Elaborating on AUO’s efforts towards achieving this verification, Dr. L. J. Chen, President and CEO of AUO, commented, “Since the manufacturing process of electronic products is very complicated and detailed, there are hundreds of suppliers in the whole supply chain. AUO conducted several suppliers’ trainings to launch the carbon footprint management, and developed a carbon database management system to increase the carbon calculation efficiency. From here, AUO successfully built up a flawless program of carbon footprint management for the supply chain. When developing the next generation of eco products, the carbon database system with detailed carbon data of the supply chain will lead AUO to the leading position in low carbon product innovation.”

The 32” LCD TV and its developers play a part in the UKAS PAS2050 Pilot Project that is working to implement the international verification standard.

The price of the LCD TV is under wraps for now.
