Samsung Unveils Blue Phase LCD Panel

Samsung Blue Phase LCD Panel Samsung launches the world’s first “Blue Phase” LCD panel that offers natural moving images with an unprecedented image driving speed of 240 Hz. It plans to unveil a 15-inch model of its Blue Phase LCD Panel at Society for Information Display 2008 International Symposium, which is a seminar and exhibition held in Los Angeles from May 18 to 23.

Samsung Electronics Executive Vice President Souk Jun-hyung, who leads the Display R&D Center of LCD Business said, “Our blue phase mode is a major evolutionary development beyond conventional liquid crystal modes. Samsung’s development of this technology provides a tremendous opportunity to move image quality of LCD screens much closer to that of a real moving image.”

Samsung Blue Phase does not need liquid crystal alignment layers that most of the LCD modes use such as Twisted Nemantic, In-Plane Switching or Vertical Alignment. Thus, making it cost effective. This new Blue Phase mode enables the formation of its own alignment layers. This eliminates the need of any other mechanical alignment or rubbing process. The production cost is cut down as the fabrication process reduces and there is no possibility of bruising the LCD panel interface.

The blue phase features a superior response rate that allows images to be reproduced at 240 Hz or higher without any need of overdrive circuit. Though this new liquid crystal mode has already been researched, Samsung is the first one to use it commercially using the “Blue Phase” technology. Samsung will begin the mass production of the Blue Phase LCD by 2011 and the LCD panels will be used in televisions requiring high-speed video reproduction.
