Apple adds new desktop PCs to iMac family

Just after gracing the display market with its new LED model, Apple now gets ready to update the iMac portfolio with Intel Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7 processors and powerful graphics. The new desktop PCs pave the way in different screen sizes and processor offerings to allure users with different needs.

iMac performance is upgraded with dual-core Intel Core i3 and Core i5, and quad-core Core i5 and Core i7 processors. The Apple desktop PCs can fully utilize their fast 1333 MHz memory as these Intel processors equip an integrated memory controller to access the system memory directly. New ATI Radeon graphic processors deliver crisp and smooth graphics for high demanding games 3D games, creative software and technical applications.

A brilliant image across a wide 178 degree viewing angle is displayed by IPS technology featured in the iMac lineup. For storage, these desktop PCs support the SDXC format enhancing the storage card options. The 27-inch iMac owners are offered with a supplementary option of embedding a 256GB solid state drive as a primary or secondary storage drive. The iMac SSD provides up to 215 MB/s data transfer rates for faster startup and quicker launching time of applications.

“We took the world’s best all-in-one and made it even better. With the latest processors, high-performance graphics and signature aluminum and glass design, customers are going to love the latest iMac,” shared Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.

The new Apple iMac line includes two 21.5-inch desktop PCs and two 27-inch desktop PCs. The portfolio equips iSight video camera for video conferencing purposes, integrated stereo speakers and microphone, and 4GB DDR3 SDRAM expandable to 16GB. Except the 21.5-inch 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3 iMac, the other three iMacs come with 1TB Serial ATA hard drive running at 7200 rpm. The 21.5-inch 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3 iMac comes with 500GB Serial ATA hard drive instead.

Connectivity ports for the four models include four USB 2.0 ports, one FireWire 800 port, Mini DisplayPort for audio and video output, and slot-load 8x SuperDrive with double-layer support. AirPort Extreme 802.11n wireless networking and Bluetooth 2.1 are also packed in.

The iMac meets Energy Star 5.0 requirements and achieves EPEAT Gold status. The LED-backlit displays of the offerings are mercury-free and are built with arsenic-free glass. Also, the entire lineup is made with PVC-free components and cables, highly recyclable materials and does not contain brominated flame retardants.

The new desktop PC line employs Mac OS X Snow Leopard and subsumes iLife. iLife features iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand for multimedia enthusiasts. Apple’s Magic Mouse is also bundled in with these new PCs. Interestingly, users can also order the innovative Magic Trackpad to complement their iMac desktop.

The new iMac line is now available through the Apple Store, Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers. The two 21.5-inch 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3 iMac and 3.2 GHz Intel Core i3 iMac are priced at $1,199 (approx Rs. 56,054) and $1,499 (approx Rs. 70,079), respectively. Whereas, the two 27-inch 3.2 GHz Intel Core i3 iMac and 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 iMac are available for $1,699 (approx Rs. 79,442) and $1,999 (approx Rs. 93,469), respectively.
