The BlackBerry Torch handset showing off RIM’s new BlackBerry 6 OS was launched nearly a couple of months back in the U.S. It’s time mobile enthusiasts in India are treated to the phone. With much fanfare, RIM had Deepika Padukone unveil the BlackBerry Torch 9800 phone at an event in Mumbai today. Claimed to be the company’s first full touch screen experience with a keyboard, the phone seemed to pack in quite a punch.

The newly launched handset is said to be the first one to incorporate the new BlackBerry 6 operating system. Taking a step ahead in mobile communication, it’s filled to the gill with multimedia features as well. Socially connected users should be more than happy to take a bite from the wide list of dedicated clients like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Supporting high-speed 3G (UMTS/HSDPA) networks, our hands-on unit gave us seamless internet connectivity on the EDGE network too.

The Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled phone is further spruced up with integrated GPS for location-based applications and geo-tagging. The handset is outfitted with a 5MP camera enabled for high quality images and video recording. With combined 8GB of media storage out-of-the-box, its support for micoSD/SDHD memory card slot allows the storage capacity to read at a maximum of 32GB.

As for the BlackBerry 6 operating system, it boasts of being a revamped interface that works effortlessly with the touchscreen and trackpad. With more personalization options, a host of applications can be added as favorites to the homescreen. Its expansive messaging abilities include simplified management of social networking and RSS feeds. In-built access to BBM along with a number of other instant messaging applications is featured too.

What’s more, the new and powerful WebKit-based browser in the phone renders seamless web navigation while keeping bandwidth usage to a minimum. The web browsing experience wraps in access to multiple sites with the ability to reach each site via definite tabs. The company revealed the included Universal search feature to be a highlight. Frenny Bawa maintained that ‘ongoing discussions with the Indian government are very constructive,’ so users needn’t be disappointed right away in regards to the looming ban.

The BlackBerry Torch 9800 phone is available for Rs. 35,000 and the company is very confident about the phone being popular among consumers in India.
