LG reports Blast of Lithium-ion Laptop Batteries, still considering it as Safe

LG Chem with laptop After, Toshiba’s laptop explosion, South Korea-based LG Electronics have received a complaint on LG laptop battery blast. According to the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute, a state-sponsored power apparatus test firm, the explosion was due to an external shock under an extremely high temperature and it wouldn’t burst in normal conditions.

“The odds of a battery explosion is one in 1 billion, but statistical analysis has little meaning in this case,” said Eom Seung-wook, a researcher at the Electrotechnology institute.

The laptop, which belonged to a South Korean journalist, worked on Lithium-ion batteries that were developed by its affiliate LG Chem Ltd. Both the makers are in the process to hunt down the reason behind the heat and pressure that led to the blast.

However, the battery manufacturer does not recall the batteries used in the notebook computers by LG Electronics.

The explosion case came into notice in January, when the reporter kept his laptop in sleep mode. Seconds after he took the laptop onto the rooftop of his building when he observed smoke and sparks, laptop blasted. Luckily, no injuries were reported.

The new laptop has been delivered to the journalist.
