Digital Video Recorder on its way to India

1

Digital Video Recorder We all remember Video Cassette recorder (VCR) that allowed us to record audio and video from a television broadcast onto the removable videotape cassettes. In this digital world, a step further has been taken with the introduction of Digital Video Recorder (DVR), enabling users to pause, record, play back, rewind and fast forward television programmes.

Commonly known as direct-to-home (DTH), it is also in process to take a huge leap. Dish TV, a leading DTH player is all set to unveil a sleeker, technologically advanced version of the DVR. To vie, Tata Sky has already announced a personal video recorders (PVR).

First in the row to provide a solution through cable TV service, Hathway had recently joined hands with the UK-based NDS Technology for offering DVRs to its viewers. It is slated to be available in India in the coming few months.

Viewers have the freedom to record one program even whilst they are watching some another TV show. They are allowed to build and manage their own personal playlist. All they need to do is install the software in the television.

However, there are some things to be kept in mind, such as the signals have to be received at a preset frequency, otherwise picture becomes pixelated. Weather conditions also play a vital role for signal quality.

Talking about the cost, Dish TV has set a price tag of over Rs 10,000. However, the exact price of the DVR or DVR-enabled set-up box is not yet finalized.

On the other side, Reliance Communications is working to provide Big TV direct to home service next month. The company could deliver TiVo in the Indian market. It would have the ability to not only record the requested programmes but also programmes that interests viewers.

We can’t predict the future, but we can at least wait and watch whether DVR makes its presence in the Indian market or not.
