Though 4G is starting to emerge as the next best thing to 3G, it’ll be some time until the former is embraced on a significantly wider scale. In other words, it’s not yet time for 3G to give up its revelry and make way for 4G. Cricket has announced the Huawei EC1705 modem with True Rate monthly plans that allow users to hook up their notebooks or desktops to their all 3G network.

The $40 Basic plan offers users access to e-mail, web browsing, social networking, sharing of photos, IM and chat. It allows for 125 hours of web surfing or uploading of up to 850 digital photos and 2.5GB of data usage per month. Apart from the aforesaid facilities, the $50 More plan delivers an additional 2.5GB of data usage, music and video streaming, online gaming, 125 more hours of web browsing or 1,200 MP3 or 20 half-hour video downloads.

“This convenient broadband device is one of many that we will be introducing before the end of this year,” cited Matt Stoiber, vice president and general manager of devices, Cricket Communications. “Our growing lineup of broadband devices perfectly complements the new data plans with no hidden fees or overage charges announced last week, which provide our customers with high-speed internet access on our all-3G network.”

The $60 Premium plan extends all the facilities offered by the $50 plan apart from throwing in an extra 2.5GB of data usage, 2,000 MP3 or 30 half-hour video downloads and 125 additional hours of web surfing. It is chalked up to suit small offices, families and heavy users. The download speed rendered with each of the three plans reads at 1.4MB/s. The 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7 and Mac OS X10.4.11 to 10.6.3-compatible modem has 128MB of memory and 32MB hard disk room.

The EC1705 is out for $64.99 (approx. Rs. 3,000) with any of the aforementioned unlimited, all-inclusive broadband service plans. It will hit Cricket branded retail stores and dealers in select cities like Chicago, Denver, Houston, Phoenix, San Antonio, Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and Pittsburgh as well as their online portal.
