Cisco eases mobile collaboration with Cius HD video-capable business tablet

Business professionals who are always on the move may now benefit the most from Cisco’s latest offering. Sensing the need for a highly portable computing solution, the company has recently revealed a unique mobile collaboration business tablet, the Cisco Cius.

Cius is an ideal solution which delivers virtual desktop integration with an added access to the full range of Cisco collaboration and communication applications. Services like full telepresence interoperability, HD video streaming and real-time video, multi-party conferencing, email, messaging, browsing, and editing or sharing content stored locally or centrally in the cloud are offered by the device.

Users can utilize the tablet’s open platform for communication and collaboration which helps them connect easily when on the move. Based on the Android operating system, the device provides users with the ability to access and share content from any place on the network. The Cius helps IT professionals or Android developers with its virtual integration which facilitates flexible computing option with cloud-based services at lesser costs.

Cisco Cius is a lightweight (0.52kg) business computing tablet which lets users avail the benefits of Cisco collaboration applications subsuming Cisco Quad, Cisco Show and Share, Cisco WebEx Connect, Cisco WebEx Meeting Center, Cisco Presence, and interoperability with Cisco TelePresence while traveling. Existing Cisco environments can easily integrate the device as it supported by Cisco Unified Communications Manager. Connectivity ports include HD DisplayPort, USB ports, a telephone handset speakerphone, and an optional HD audio station.

The tablets equips two cameras, a front-mounted 720p HD camera which has a 30fps refresh rate and a 5 megapixel rear facing camera which transmits streaming VGA quality video and captures still images with dual noise-canceling microphones for audio conferencing. A 7-inch high-resolution widescreen super VGA touch-target display adorns the device for real-time and streamed video in addition to single-button TelePresence interoperability.

With Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n support, the business computing solution also offers enterprise campus mobility, 3G cellular services, and a future availability of 4G services. Users can work untethered and share data with a PC with the tablet’s Bluetooth and Micro-USB. Other highlights of the device are detachable and serviceable battery with eight hours life under normal usage, an eloquent contacts-driven user experience, and an on-board accelerometer which orients applications for viewing in portrait or landscape mode as user rotates the tablet.

The business solution reduces licensing costs and consolidates data center support with its host software application in a protected environment for IT organizations. Cisco network can be utilized by these companies to deliver their applications. Besides, developers will be proffered with Cisco Collaboration Application Protocol Interfaces through a Software Developer’s Kit.

Cisco informed that customer trials of Cisco Cius will begin in the third quarter of the current year, with anticipated availability in the first quarter of the year 2011. Pricing of the same is yet to be revealed.
